A New CAMP NOU Open to All
>
The stadium Camp Nou, translated from Catalan as “New field”, which is the home stadium of Futbol Club Barcelona, or Barça, as it is often called, expect a large-scale reconstruction. Plans for the restructuring of the stadium was unveiled in 2007, the year of its 50th anniversary, but the global financial crisis of 2008–2009 did not allow them to be done.
On June 5th, 2015, a 2-phased International Architecture Competition was launched with the publication of a tender document defining the rules and criteria of the competition. First Round: 26 candidates. Second round: in September 2015, the jury chose eight finalist teams consisting of at least one international and one local architectural firm. And on 8 March 2016, the jury unanimously chose the proposal from the team of Nikken Sekkei + Pascual-Ausió Arquitectes, which stands out because it is open, elegant, serene, timeless, Mediterranean and democratic.
The winning architectural team was inspired by the Tribuna marquee, an extremely elegant structure and a hallmark of the Camp Nou, which inspired the design of the Nou Camp Nou façade. The proposal, summarized, is a reinterpretation and extension of the marquee by Francesc Mitjans to the entire stadium, on all three levels and also extending to the new roof. It is a proposal based on architectural and sentimental values unique to this stadium, and unlike all others.
The marquee disappears inside the stadium and reappears on the street side, inside out, forming the outer eaves, which then become the ceilings of the concourses, services and terraces, creating an open façade to the esplanade. The new Camp Nou will be singular and unique, for it will be different, innovative and with a strong personality.
First tier: New construction, parabolic and more vertical with improved visibility.
Second tier: Signature tier with excellent visibility maintained, but comfort, accessibility and services are improved.
Third tier: Top ring completed on all sides with improved comfort, accessibility and services.
The Camp Nou renovation is one of the pillars of Espai Barça, which includes the transformation of all of FC Barcelona´s facilities in the neighborhood of Les Corts in Barcelona as well as the construction of the New Mini Estadi in the Joan Gamper Sports City. Espai Barça is a dream for all Barcelona fans which will become reality during the 2021–2022 season.
