Bauhaus Museum Dessau: Interaction Architecture
The opening of the Bauhaus Museum Dessau on September 8, 2019 was one of the highlights of the centenary. So important that the museum was opened personally by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. For the very first time the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation’s unique collection will be displayed in a comprehensive way and at the same time the museum will be established as location for contemporary positions that also connects the Bauhaus Buildings.
The Bauhaus Museum Dessau is being built for the centenary of the founding of the Bauhaus and will open in 2019, the centenary year. So far, it has only been possible to present the prized collection of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation in a limited way in the Bauhaus Building. In the new museum, a suitable space to publicly display the collection is being created for the very first time.
The collection of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation comprises around 49,000 catalogued exhibits and is the second-largest collection worldwide on the theme of the Bauhaus. The new museum will have an exhibition space of 2,100 square metres and a total usable area of 3,500 square metres.
A BUILDING WITHIN A BUILDING
Bauhaus Museum Dessau is a building within a building, a soaring concrete block enveloped in glass. At the end of 2015 the proposal from Barcelona based young architectural practice addenda architects won over the jury in the open international competition, which had attracted 831 submissions from all over the world. The architecture stands out for the clarity and simplicity of both the concept and the aesthetics. It is restrained yet persuasive, and the formal vocabulary is a creative take on both the present and Modernism.
