Center of Science under the “Solar Veil”
The Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex (ISEC) is a 234,000 square-foot (21,700 m2) building at Northeastern University designed to provide an innovative environment for collaborative research, laboratory access, and classroom learning. The building is located on the University’s central campus at 805 Columbus Ave, Boston, Massachusetts. The building initially opened on April 3, 2017. The project was developed by Payette, recognized by the American Institute of Architects “2019 Architecture Firm Award”.
Constructed on an urban brownfield site consisting of an existing surface parking lot set between two garages, ISEC I represents the completion of the first phase of the newly planned 660,000 SF academic precinct. Flow and Movement define the form language of this building. Dynamic movement systems permeate the project, expand a campus and bridge two Boston neighborhoods. This cutting-edge research facility defines a new academic and social hub for students and allows Northeastern University to compete as a premier research institution.
ISEC I is the first academic and research building to expand the Northeastern University campus to the south of a major rail corridor in the city of Boston. This project and the subsequent phases are symbols of Northeastern’s ongoing mission to strengthen communities by bringing them together. The pedestrian bridge crossing the rail lines was lifted into place last fall and will open in 2019.
