Cities Make Citizens
With the constant growth of the Earth’s population people are building new cities, and in turn the city create the townspeople. If the city is comfortable and safe, and the residents will be free and happy. Well-known japan architectural-engineering company “Nikken Sekkei” aims to design cities which interest and attract people, promoting social relationships, innovation and progress. The projects are focused on providing explanation, how people interact with public spaces and buildings in their daily lives and enhance the value of this experience. Attractive open spaces, vibrant streets and city services form the perfect urban environment, where people are pleased to live, work, meet and move freely. The basic principles underlying the urban development projects, created Nikken Sekkei in the book “NIKKEN SEKKEI URBANISM”, the head of which we offer to our readers. In this issue we will focus on the design of the vibrant neighborhoods.

Japan’s cities have always placed value, both historically and culturally, on human scale and sensitivity and stressed the importance of communication between people. Tokyo and Osaka have evolved as role models of successful urban metropolitan areas, with their integrated greenery and public spaces within their compact, mixed-use and often high-density neighborhoods. In contributing to Japan’s urban model of mixing residential and commercial uses, we are keenly aware that this not only reduces vehicular traffic and energy consumption, it also creates time and opportunities for people; time to participate in activities which evolve into new lifestyles, time to communicate, and opportunities for new, innovative ideas and the spawning of new industry. Envisioning and pursuing the design of vibrant neighborhoods, we seek to create urban spaces of opportunity, where value is created and life can evolve from generation to generation.
