FREESPACE – Space of Creative Freedom

From May 26 to November 25, 2018, the 16th International Architecture Exhibition is held in the framework of the Venice Biennale (La Biennale di Venezia), one of the most discussed and attractive events for architects around the world. This year, its theme, identified by curators Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, sounds like Freespace. Architecture as a section appeared on this art exhibition in 1975, in 1980 the relevant section was established and held the 1st International Architecture Exhibition, but as an independent department in the Statute of the Venice Biennale was approved in 1998. Initially, the exhibitions and events took about four weeks, then the terms were extended to three months, and since 2014 architecture has been presented in Venice for six months, which gives a new impetus to the Biennale as a whole.

On May 26 – the opening day of the 16th architectural Biennale, the curators Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara have announced the winning contributions to the 16th International Architecture Exhibition, selected with the help of jury members Frank Barkow, Sofia Von Ellrichshausen, Kate Goodwin, Patricia Patkau, and Pier Paolo Tamburelli.

As was announced in April, English architect, historian, critic and educator Kenneth Frampton received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. His work as an architectural historian was praised for its “extraordinary insight and intelligence combined with a unique sense of integrity.”

The Golden Lion at the Freespace Exhibition was awarded to Eduardo Souto de Moura, lauded “for the precision of the pairing of two aerial photographs, which reveals the essential relationship between architecture, time and place.”
