Libraries of the XXI Century

Libraries are more than learning centers—they’re also enduring examples of architectural excellence. Every year, the AIA is proud to partner with the American Library Association/Library Leadership and Management Association to honor the best in library architecture and design.

The AIA/ALA Library Building Award is the only award that recognizes entire library structures and all aspects of their design. Eight library buildings - seven in the US and one in Latvia - opened between 2012 and 2016 were awarded in 2017. There are new buildings or the reconstructions of existing buildings with newly constructed volumes among the winners.

There are small libraries of local significance and such large ones as the Central Branch of the Boston Public Library and the Latvian National Library in the winners list. But they all use the most modern technologies, organize the storage, use of their funds and accommodate the most comfortable conditions for visitors. Four libraries have successfully passed certification on the international LEED system, which means that they create all the conditions for a comfortable live of people and at the same time rationally consume natural resources.
