«The Eye» of Tianjin: to See and Be Seen

MVRDV and Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute (TUPDI) have completed Tianjin Binhai Library as part of a larger masterplan to provide a cultural district for the city. Because of a tight construction schedule by the local government, the project went from preliminary drawings to its doors opening within three years.

A part of the Urban Core project, the Binhai Cultural Center combines five venues, connected by a large covered arcade. The Center shall combine the Binhai Citizen’s Activities Center, the Binhai Modern Art Museum, the Binhai Modern City and Industrial Discovery Museum, Binhai Library and the Binhai Performing Arts Center.

Tianjin Library is part of German architects GMP’s 120,000 m2 masterplan which aims to accentuate the characteristics of the surrounding districts. Through its design, the complex will become a junction point for the CBD, old town, residential districts, commercial areas and the government quarter; hoping to compensate for any missing programme in each. It also has the amenities you would expect to find in any popular attraction, with some small shops and eateries available if you plan to spend the day.
