Tianjin Eco-City: Decade of Quality

In 2018, it was ten years since the launch of the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City (SSTEC) joint Chinese-Singapore project. This project is being implemented in the Tianjin urban area, the third largest in mainland China, to jointly develop an economically-vibrant, socially harmonious, environmentally friendly and resource-conserving city in China.

In 2007, it was determined under the Sino-Singapore framework agreement that Tianjin Eco-City shall be built into an ecological city with “resource conservation, environmental protection and social harmony,” and “become the model for the sustainable development of other cities in China.” Tianjin Eco-City, which used to be saline-alkali wasteland before its construction, has a land area of 30km2 and is planned for a population of 350,000 residents. Since its commencement in 2008, the southern part of Tianjin Eco-city has been reached 95% of its design plan after 10 years of construction, which covers a total area of 7.8km2 and accommodates a total number of 110,000 people.

LOCATION

The Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City is strategically located in the economically thriving Tianjin Binhai New Area (TBNA), which is the part of the Chinese government’s plans for the integrated development of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei. The Eco-City is highly accessible from key cities and industrial districts in the region via major highways, railways, air routes and shipping lines. It is located just 45km and 150km away from the bustling city centers of Tianjin and Beijing respectively, while the highly developed Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA) is only 10km away.
