Achieve Buddhahood
>
It’s a contemporary Buddhism temple based on the concept of reincarnation. The essence of Buddhism’s Sutra is so called “formlessness”. Based on this, the form searching of the architecture becomes the path from the beginning to the end. The prototype of Buddhism’s temple is from ancient time and based on ancient tectonic and space defining logic. With the aid of digital design and fabrication techniques, the solution will have different possibilities.
Mobius ring is used as the metaphor of reincarnation in this design. The inner surface and outer surface meets in the same point seamlessly. This process is just like the reincarnation in Buddhism. Circulation revolves from outside to inside through the space just like the reincarnation through different life forms.
The function of the space flows with the ascending ring from more public hall in the first floor to the praying room in the second floor and finally private teaching room with master. Through this spiral circulation, every function is connected to the central hall with the Buddha statue. On the top of central hall, it is covered with glass roof allowing natural light coming from above. It will change the atmosphere of the central hall in every hour. The idea of non-stop time reminds the eternity of Buddhism.
The unique form needs a special structure. The major structure is the steel truss with double curve frit steel panel as skin. It’s like a Chinese lantern with the bamboo frame and paper skin. Around the temple is a lotus pond. The only connection between the temple and outside ground is a bridge. The whole setting makes the temple detach the outside world.
