Floriada-2022 – Cité Idéale
Floriade is an international exhibition of flowers and gardening, held every 10 years in the Netherlands, now is to open only in the distant 2022, but the preparation for it has already begun. For the right to host the Floriade fought four cities, and the winner was Almere. The city is located in the central part of the country, 35 km away from the center of Amsterdam. This is one of the youngest cities in the Netherlands, which is rapidly evolving, so the “Ideal City” (Cité Idéale), proposed by MVRD V, turned out the best solution for future exhibition.
The City of Almere Almere was one of four Dutch cities among Amsterdam, Groningen and Boskoop region competing to be the next location of the prestigious horticultural Expo and it has revealed it’s MVRDV-designed proposal for the Floriade 2022 candidature. Rather than creating a temporary expo site, MVRDV has designed a lasting Cité Idéale, which would serve as a green extension to Almere’s city center.
The ambition is to create a 300% greener exhibition than currently standard, both literally green and sustainable: each program on the site will be combined with plants which will create programmatic surprises, innovation and ecology. The site with a vast program such as a university, hotel, marina, offices and homes will at the same time be more urban than any other Floriade has been before, literally constructing the green city.
It can become even completely independent economically. But in order to the heart of Almere appeared such a magical place, in the project is planned to invest € 300 million.
Amsterdam’s metropolitan area stands at the verge of a large population growth. In keeping with this tendency, it is Almere, located about 35 km from the city center and has her good connections, when within this development will be realized the largest new developments with 60.000 new homes. Almere has the ambition to realize the urban growth with improved life quality for its citizens.
