20 of the world’s best architects and designers will present their version of a dolls’ house in an exhibition and auction at Bonhams in aid of KIDS. The inspiration behind the project came from the iconic Edwin Lutyens designed Queen Mary dolls’ house, created in 1922 with the aid of over 1,500 craftsmen and women. Taking the language of a traditional children’s toy and using it to display the best of modern British architecture, craftsmanship and interior design, Cathedral Group asked 20 contemporary architects and designers to design and build a dolls’ house for the 21st Century.

Their brief was simple. Each house had to fit on a 750mm x 750mm plinth, be robust enough to be played with and have one design feature for a child with a disability. The roll call of contributors was a who’s who in the world of architecture and design and included Zaha Hadid, Grayson Perry, David Adjaye and Chris Ofili, all of whom contributed their services in aid of KIDS.

The 20 houses looked fantastic in Bonhams’ beautiful new gallery which only opened a couple of weeks ago. The gallery was designed by Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, one of the participating architects whose house was one of the highest bidding lots and sold for £11,000. £90,000 was raised for KIDS as 20 specially designed Dolls’ Houses that were commissioned by proper ty developer, Cathedral Group, went under the hammer at Bonhams.
