Honeycomb: Luxury Units

While Albany seems worlds away, getting here is easy. Conveniently located on the island of New Providence, Albany is minutes from Nassau’s international airport, which offers non-stop flights daily from major cities in the United States, Canada and Europe. Private investment organization Tavistock Group along with golfing greats Tiger Woods and Ernie Els have come together to create the luxury resort community of Albany.

The Albany, a luxury resort in the Bahamas with boldface names like Tiger Woods and Ernie Els for investors, hopes to capitalize on this latest trend. BIG has released plans, alongside collaborators HKS and Michael Diggiss Architects, of a luxury, midrise condominium at the Albany Bahamas resort. Located on the south coast of New Providence Island, “The Honeycomb” will offer 34, 3,000 to 8,000 square foot apartments, each complete with a private outdoor pool and summer kitchen integrated into the structure’s hexagonal-shaped facade.

The 175,000 square foot structure will join a triad of condominiums overlooking the resort’s marina. The Honeycomb condominium will join three other new buildings, each by relatively wellknown architects. These buildings have already sold out and are expected to open this year. The condominiums cluster around the marina, which is designed to harbor extra-large yachts, and to offer unimpeded views of the expansive ocean. The condominiums are part of the resort’s master plan, by Andrés Duany, who is perhaps best known as the designer of the planned community of Seaside, Fla.

On the ground level, high-end retail is expected to activate a public plaza, whose subtle topography will be informed by the Honeycomb’s geometric facade. Raised hexagons will be transformed into green mounds and integrated seating, while various fountains, located between pathways of hexagonal pavers, supply a network of creeks which feed a shallow pond at the plaza’s center.

A golf cart parking and storage units are oriented towards the parking lot on the north, in close proximity to Albany’s championship golf course. The Honeycomb will be the centerpiece of Albany’s masterplan for a live, work, play environment unlike any other in The Bahamas. The Honeycomb is expected to break ground this summer, and open for occupancy in 2016.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Honeycomb will become the tallest structure in Albany, visible from every point of the resort and serve as a beacon from the sea. Surrounded by extraordinary views of the marina and its surrounding community, the residences in the building offer a variety of floor plans that will suit the diverse lifestyles of its tenants. To emphasize the relationship with its surroundings, the building has a full glass facade and is wrapped in balconies, connecting the interiors with the natural beauty of the Island.
