SUPER KILEN : Red, Black, Green
Superkilen is an innovative public park in the Nørrebro district of Copenhagen, Denmark. Superkilen is the result of the creative collaboration between BI G, Topotek1 and SUPERFLEX , which constitutes a rare fusion of architecture, landscape architecture and art from its early concept to construction stage. The project is part of an urban improvement plan coordinated by the City of Copenhagen in a partnership with Realdania. The objective is to upgrade the Nørrebro neighbourhood to a high standard of urban development liable to inspire other cities and districts.
In the 1960’s - 70’s immigrants began to settle in the Nerrebro district, and today it is inhabited by many different ethnic groups. Nørrebro is also known for its poly-cultural society, mostly from Middle-Eastern background. The dynamic, multiethnic main street Nørrebrogade runs through the area, with a multitude of shops and restaurants. Nørrebrogade is known as the site of many riots over the years. During the 1980s, it often provided the setting for violent clashes between Danish police and militant squatters known as BZ. On March 1, 2007, the biggest riots in recent Danish history broke out when the police moved in and evicted squatters in Ungdomshuset, which was followed by the demolition of the building. The area is still considered one of the most turbulent in Denmark, but with the opening of the Superkilen Park in June 2012, it has a chance to become a sample of good neighborliness and tolerance.
The project was rewarded with a 2013 AIA Honor Award in the Regional & Urban Design category by the American Institute of Architects. It is shortlisted for Design of the Year by the Design Museum in London as well as for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture.
