TOP 10 Green Projects in American Style
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and its Committee on the Environment (COTE) have selected the top ten examples of sustainable architecture and ecological design projects that protect and enhance the environment. The program celebrates projects that are the result of a thoroughly integrated approach to architecture, natural systems and technology.
They make a positive contribution to their communities, improve comfort for building occupants and reduce environmental impacts through strategies such as reuse of existing structures, connection to transit systems, low-impact and regenerative site development, energy and water conservation, use of sustainable or renewable construction materials, and design that improves indoor air quality.
Many of these projects we selected are affordable and have revitalized urban areas and spaces. They show just how far green has come, from a once novel and expensive endeavor to a replicable mainstream model of urban renewal and sustainable development.
Ten buildings recognized as the most green this year were built in nine American states and in the Canadian state of Ontario. Traditionally among them regions in which for many years special attention is paid to development of ecosteady construction, such as California (two projects), Texas (two projects), Washington, Oregon, Massachusetts, and also Louisiana and New York.
