Sustainability Across-the-Board

Among the buildings that became this year’s award winners of the Royal Institute British Architects, we have selected those projects that have been specially marked for their design and specially great attention paid to green technologies. Now they are actively used in the operation of these buildings, making them friendly to the environment. Among those, which received the awards for environmental sustainability, primarily, are social facilities, which were built in small towns that still do not diminish their importance for the overall development of Sustainable Construction.

GOLDEN HIVE
Her Majesty The Queen officially opened The Hive in Worcester on 11 July 2012. Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, visiting Worcester as part of her regional tour for the Diamond Jubilee of her accession to the throne in 1953.

This new building is the first library in UK and Europe to be used jointly by a university and the public. Additionally, the Hive promotes lifelong learning. It also accommodates the county archive, accommodating 2600 historic documents, a local history centre, the county’s archaeology service and a multi-agency customer service centre providing frontline services for local residents.

The Hive is a cultural, learning and information centre of excellence promoting lifelong learning, engendering social inclusion and raising aspirations in the broadest sense for the whole community, regardless of age, background, or ability. The development also provides retail space and high quality public realm connecting key levels in the city centre.

With its golden metal shingle cladding, the Hive is a beacon, with an articulated roof form inspired by the distant Malvern hills and the iconic Royal Worcester kilns.
