Apartment Block as a Private House
>
510 Driggs is a multi-family residential project designed by ODA that aims to provide residents with the “best qualities of a private house” within Brooklyn’s dense urban landscape. Each and every one of the six-story building’s 40 units will be equipped with a large, fully functional outdoor space in addition to at least two exposures, maximizing both light and air.
“What if we could live in cities where everyone had access to some of the best qualities of a private house,” ODA asked themselves. “We then challenged the zoning rules and regulations, something we have become extremely well versed in, along with the very common fundamentals and typologies of typical apartment buildings and developed a program that satisfies all of the above. The complexity of the form serves a noble function while also becoming a beautiful piece of architecture.”
Eran Chen AIA, LEED®, is the founder and executive director of ODA. ODA Architecture is a firm known for taking all manner of cubes and rectangular prisms, piling them on top of each other, and churning out a cantilever-crazy design, which can be seen in different parts of New York: in Greenwich Village, Crown Heights, Long Island City and on the Lower East Side. Now on the order is the corner of Driggs Avenue and North 8th Street in Williamsburg – which has been stalled for eight years(!) – will get another one of the firm’s boxy creations. Now there is a parking lot. Construction is expected to begin in June of 2015.
