SOM has revealed their design for the world’s first floating eco-park along the Chicago River. Called Wild Mile Chicago, the project is sited between Chicago and North avenues along the east side of Goose Island. A group of ecologists and activists called Urban Rivers is working with the city to realize the plan.
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is honoring the Sainsbury Wing at the National Gallery in London—designed by Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates (VSBA)—with its Twenty-five Year Award. This award is conferred on a building that has set a precedent for the last 25–35 years and continues to set standards of excellence for its architectural design and significance.
Zaha Hadid Architects have been selected by the jury of the international design competition to build the new Sverdlovsk Philharmonic Concert Hall in Yekaterinburg, Russia.

TIME Magazine has named Jeanne Gang to the 2019 TIME 100. The Founding Principal of architecture and urban design practice Studio Gang, she is only architect included on this year’s list, which recognizes the activism, innovation, and achievement of the world’s most influential individuals. TIME editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal has said of the list in the past, “TIME’s annual list of the world’s most influential people is a designation of individuals whose time, in our estimation, is now.”
Light and musical installation “domino effect” brightening up Place des Festivals this winter in Montreal. As part of the novel winter experience provided by Luminothérapie, domino effect consists of 120 dominos distributed across several stations. Size of one domino: 390 × 775 × 80 mm, weight – 7 lbs, material – plastic. Dominos are designed to be as light as possible while remaining durable to allow for optimal handling
Love Sculpture at Sakura Lake Sports Park in Weihai, China, is a colossal light sculpture. Standing 42 meters tall, the flowing figure appears as if it has emerged out of the blue water. The torus-shaped sculpture has 12 lines of LED lights around its circumference. The 1,600 meters of LED RGB lights transform the sculpture into a magnificent circle of colors.
At the foot of the Harz Mountains, in the Schierke district belonging to Wernigerode, a historic and listed ice stadium has been renovated. The project Feuerstein-Arena is awarded with the German Design Award 2019. GRAFT won a Europe-wide architectural competition to renovate the ice rink in 2013 with its proposal for a unique roof construction. The competition brief outlined the need to transform the facility into a multi-functional arena for year-round use that can host not only sports but also cultural events regardless of the weather.
Sheila O’Donnell of O’Donnell + Tuomey’s has been named Architect of the Year at the Women in Architecture (WIA) awards, while 43-year-old Xu Tiantian from China has won the Moira Gemmill Prize for Emerging Architecture. The annual awards, which were presented at a prizegiving lunch 1 March at The Savoy in London, are backed by the AJ and sister title The Architectural Review.
Eindhoven University of Technology has announced plans to 3D print a series of concrete houses that will be made available to rent. In what is being described as a world first, the Dutch university is set to build five 3D-printed houses over the next five years, which will all become rental properties.
The architect behind a splayed shipping container house in California has revealed plans for a Canadian lakeside residence, comprising a string of prefabricated modular units. The Anywhere House is set to be completed in Canada’s Alberta province in 2019. It will be the first property built using James Whitaker’s prefabricated modular system, which the London-based architect developed following the publication of his Joshua Tree residence – one of Dezeen’s most popular stories in 2017.
The 2018 World Architecture Festival in Amsterdam has drawn to a close, naming a slate of overall winners. First held in Barcelona in 2008, the three-day event celebrates projects around the world while raising important issues in the profession.
The Board of Directors and the Strategic Council of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) are honoring Lord Richard Rogers, Hon. FAIA, with the 2019 Gold Medal. The Gold Medal is the AIA’s highest annual honor, recognizing individuals whose work has had a lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture.
