More than two thirds of Europeans live in towns and cities. This places major cities at the heart of the many environmental challenges facing us today, such as polluted air and water, and climate change. For years now, Copenhagen has worked intensively to meet environmental challenges, focusing on innovative and sustainable solutions. A green city is the precondition for a high quality of life that is why Copenhagen proudly accepted the prestigious award of the European Commission – European Green Capital Award in 2014.

The harbor-front project “Kalvebod Waves” officially opened on Aug. 30, 2013 at the Kalvebod Pier (Kalvebod Brygge) in Copenhagen. The design by Julien de Smedt Architects and KLAR won first prize in a competition from December 2008. Not far from the popular Islands Brygge Park in the city, Kalvebod Waves is the latest phase of a longterm plan that aims to revive a formerly desolate section of the pier into a welcoming hub for urban and water activities.

In a study of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) – “Local Leaders: Healthier Communities Through Design” on examples of particular cities considered the issue of how architecture and design tools should improve the health of the urban dwellers. Nowadays the situation is so that physical activity is significantly reduced, and this leads to excess weight and chronic diseases increase.

The East River Blueway Plan, led by WXY architecture + planning, provides a new vision for Manhattan’s East River waterfront from the Brooklyn Bridge to 38th Street. It addresses issues that were overlooked for the last half century, including waterfront access from the land and water, environmental goals, climate change adaptation and storm resiliency for the waterfront and adjacent neighborhoods.

Nordic Built Challenge, which was launched in 2012 by Nordic Innovation in Oslo challenged the Nordic construction industry to renovate five named buildings in the Nordic countries. The competition is part of a larger initiative that includes the Nordic Built Charter manifest. In September, the five national winners in the competition were announced and the winner of the main Nordic prize has now been selected by the Nordic Ministers for Business.

In October 2013 was held major design competition for EXPO -2017 in Astana, Kazakhstan. Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture’s (AS +GG) design was selected as the winner of the international competition that featured 105 entries from all over the world including Coop Himmelb(l)au, Zaha Hadid Architects, GMP International, Massimiliano, Studio Pei- Zhu, UNStudio, Snohetta, HOK , Isozaki, Aoki & Associates, and Safdie Architects.

Sherbourne Common is both major civic amenity and poetic stormwater treatment infrastructure, and a key component of the renaissance of Toronto’s waterfront. The park seamlessly interweaves stormwater management, landscape, architecture, program, and art and is the first Canadian park to integrate a UV purification facility for neighbourhood- wide stormwater treatment.

In France, in the suburbs of Paris in 2021 at the commission of the French Groupe Auchan SA is planned to build the largest cultural, wellness and shopping center in Europe with a total area of 800 thousand square meters. The main goal of the EuropaCity project is a merging of dense urban areas with large open spaces around. In the spring of 2013 the winner of the international architectural competition for the development of this project, was announced the Danish company Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG).

NOVINKI Community Development Project – the largest project of complex development of the territory in the Volga region of Russia – the satellite town just 2,5 km from Nizhny Novgorod (The Volga region Federal district, Russia) and to the end of construction the area becomes the part of the city. NOVINKI CDP – the project of the European level, which implements the actual concept of Smart City, combining technological solutions, friendliness in relation to environment and comfort of accommodation.
